Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage - Management Plan

Picture
Virtually all of the information presented in this Management Plan was assembled prior to the day Hurricane Katrina changed our lives forever. Katrina affected nearly all of the heritage resources discussed in this Management Plan, with the most extensive impacts being in the southernmost counties where numerous resources were seriously damaged or destroyed. The text of these documents remains largely unchanged because it would be impossible at this point to accommodate post-Katrina plans and observations in any meaningful way. Although the world has changed along the Mississippi Gulf Coast since the words of the Management Plan were first committed to paper, the Management Plan remains relevant to the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area’s mission of conserving and enhancing the area’s heritage resources by telling its nationally significant story to residents and visitors through activities and partnerships that celebrate the area’s unique history, people, traditions and landscapes.

Update, Feb. 1st, 2010 - The Gulf Coast Green Conference was a great sucess!  Thanks to all who participated!

Earth Day, Saturday, April 18th!

Earth Day in the Bay

Location:  Old Town Bay St. Louis on Main Street
Time:  11am - 5pm

The Town Green at the corner of Main and Second Streets was filled with nearly 40 booths featuring earth-friendly products and exhibits offering information on “green” building techniques.   Conservation and civic organizations and artists also participated in the awareness-raising event.

Several alternative energy suppliers were on hand to give the public a chance to learn about new technologies.

Live music will continued throughout the day with performances by the Dave Mayley Band and the Bay High Marching Band.   The food and beverage line-up included booths offering homemade lemonade, bar-b-que and gumbo.  Voght pointed out that Old Town restaurants will add to the dining choices.

Earth Day closed with a special “After-Party” for vendors and festival-goers held at the Mockingbird Café, 110 South Second Street.  The café served Mockingburgers, Portobello Burgers and Lazy Magnolia beer for the evening, with music performed by the Full Cyrcle band from 5-7pm.

Five oak trees were raffled off during the after-party with grand prizes – two large 15-gallon potted Magnolia trees (value, $100 each)– awarded at 7pm.  The tree raffle was sponsored by Lazy Magnolia Brewery, with proceeds going to benefit Recycle Hancock.

Free Geothermal Seminar on Feb. 10th, 2009

A Community Seminar  on Geothermal Systems was held in Bay St. Louis on Tuesday,  Feb. 10th at the city Conference Center (corner of Main St and Hwy 90).  The seminar began at 5:30pm and offered information on the cost- saving potential of geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Over fifty people attended this premier Community Education Seminar in a series sponsored by a partnership between the city of Bay St. Louis and Live Oak Alliance, Mississippi (LOAM).  The city recently became the first member of the new alliance.

Guest speakers were Larry Morgan, former Superintendant of the Booneville School District (who oversaw installation of these systems in his schools) and Chris Cosper, a LEED Certified Architect and Instructor at the Mississippi State School of Architecture.  Cosper also served as architect on the Booneville School Project.

In addition to the long-term savings realized by geothermal systems, Morgan and Cosper discussed installation and maintenance of the systems for commercial and residential use.  The systems can be used in refits of existing buildings, as well as in new construction.

Both Mr. Morgan and Mr. Cosper work with the Education and Design Institute at Ms. State.  The Institute is a non-profit organization with the mission to ensure that school districts across the state have access to the latest and best information on building and design issues.
