We’re excited to announce that registration is now open for the Gulf Coast Green Conference!

To accommodate a wide range of interests, we’ve structured this conference into two tracks.

Track 1:  Building Sustainable Houses – A two day track (Monday & Tuesday) that focuses on the practical nuts and bolts of how to build “green” sustainable houses.  Facilitated by Mike Monegeon from Habitat for Humanity International, this track is for builders, architects, planning and zoning personnel, Habitat building staff, and others interested in how to build sustainably in the Gulf Coast.  Track 1 attendees also attend Steve Hewitt’s session Tuesday morning.

Track 2:  Building Sustainable Communities-This one day track (Tuesday) begins with a dynamic presentation from Steve Hewitt, City Administrator for Greensburg, Kansas, the town that nearly destroyed by tornados in 2007.  Steve led the citizens of his town rebuild “totally green”.  Their story has been featured on Planet Green’s popular reality TV show “Greensburg.”  After lunch, Track 2 attendees are invited to participate in a panel discussion and breakout groups to develop an action plan for developing a greener sustainable Mississippi Gulf Coast.  This track will appeal to green enthusiasts, community leaders, activists, Habitat staff, government officials, and others who want to help make their community more sustainably green.

The cost for Track 1 is just $45.  Track 2 (Tuesday) is just $25.  Habitat Affiliates receive a discounted rate of $20.
Lunch is provided both days.

You can pay online when you register, or onsite at the event.

Mark your Calendars!  Earth Day, Saturday, April 18th!

Location:  Old Town Bay St. Louis on Main Street
Time:  11am - 5pm

Earth Day in the Bay is showing signs of new growth in 2009 with an expanded celebration!

The Town Green at the corner of Main and Second Streets will be filled with nearly 40 booths featuring earth-friendly products and exhibits offering information on “green” building techniques.   Conservation and civic organizations and artists are also participating in the awareness-raising event.

Festival Coordinator Judy Voght said several alternative energy suppliers will be on hand this year, giving the public a chance to learn about new technologies.  And for gardening enthusiasts, community gardening info and sign-up will be available.

Another new addition is a booth sponsored by Pine Hills Nursery, the Coast’s largest retail grower. For the first time in their 23-year history, the D’Isle nursery will be exhibiting at a show.  Well-known for their selection of native species, Pine Hills will be one of several booths offering quality herbs, plants and trees for sale.

Live music will continue throughout the day with performances by the Dave Mayley Band and the Bay High Marching Band.   The food and beverage line-up includes booths offering homemade lemonade, bar-b-que and gumbo.  Voght pointed out that Old Town restaurants will add to the dining choices.

Earth Day will close with a special “After-Party” for vendors and festival-goers held at the Mockingbird Café, 110 South Second Street.  The café will be serving Mockingburgers, Portobello Burgers and Lazy Magnolia beer for the evening, with music performed by the Full Cyrcle band from 5-7pm.

Five oak trees will be raffled off during the after-party with grand prizes – two large 15-gallon potted Magnolia trees (value, $100 each)– awarded at 7pm.  The tree raffle is sponsored by Lazy Magnolia Brewery, with proceeds going to benefit Recycle Hancock.

For more details on Earth Day in the Bay, contact Judy Voght at 228-463-0067.

Free Geothermal Seminar on Feb. 10th, 2009

A Community Seminar  on Geothermal Systems was held in Bay St. Louis on Tuesday,  Feb. 10th at the city Conference Center (corner of Main St and Hwy 90).  The seminar began at 5:30pm and offered information on the cost- saving potential of geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Over fifty people attended this premier Community Education Seminar in a series sponsored by a partnership between the city of Bay St. Louis and Live Oak Alliance, Mississippi (LOAM).  The city recently became the first member of the new alliance.

Guest speakers were Larry Morgan, former Superintendant of the Booneville School District (who oversaw installation of these systems in his schools) and Chris Cosper, a LEED Certified Architect and Instructor at the Mississippi State School of Architecture.  Cosper also served as architect on the Booneville School Project.

In addition to the long-term savings realized by geothermal systems, Morgan and Cosper discussed installation and maintenance of the systems for commercial and residential use.  The systems can be used in refits of existing buildings, as well as in new construction.

Both Mr. Morgan and Mr. Cosper work with the Education and Design Institute at Ms. State.  The Institute is a non-profit organization with the mission to ensure that school districts across the state have access to the latest and best information on building and design issues.
